The son of a prosperous merchant, Rainerius led a dissolute life as a minstrel until encountering a holy monk, Alberto. The example of his life, convinced the young wanderer of the truth of Christ.

Following his baptism, he saved enough money to travel to the Holy Land wherein he lived as a holy beggar totally absorbed in Christ. He eventually returned to Pisa, the monastery, to pray, to preach and exorcise in a life conformed to the imitationem Christi.
